Our Story: Preparation for the People Who Matter Most
The Kitchen Table Moment
The idea for J.P. Sutton didn't start in a boardroom; it started at our own kitchen table. Like you, my greatest concern is the safety of my three young adults. As they moved out into an unpredictable world to start their own lives in the city, I realized that if they faced an unexpected event—a prolonged blackout, an infrastructure failure, or an urban emergency—I wanted them to have more than just a phone that might lose power.
I didn't start J.P. Sutton to build survival gear. I started it to give them solid basics they could count on if things were disrupted.
From Global Risk to Personal Resilience
Throughout my career, my job was to manage critical operational risks within global financial institutions. As a Senior Risk Manager, I managed operations and calculated the "Likelihood and Impact" of unusual events. My objective was to identify the risks that could disrupt operations and design continuity frameworks to support resilience.
But my career taught me a vital lesson: It is impossible to predict the exact face of the next crisis. When a true emergency happens, it rarely looks like the scenario you practiced. Because of that, effective resiliency doesn't come from a static "kit"—it comes from having a set of versatile essentials.
The "Building Block" Philosophy
In the banking world, we relied on what we called "recovery assets"—versatile tools that could be combined in different ways depending on the situation. I realized my own young adults didn't need a bag full of single-use gadgets; they needed high-quality "building blocks" of resilience that would be useful for years:
- Power: To keep their lifeline—the smartphone—functioning for news, maps, and family contact.
- Information: A reliable way to receive official updates if networks are unavailable, along with structured informational materials to help think through complex situations.
- Sustenance: Water filtration and nutrition components selected for durability and long-term usability.
- Maintenance: For my own family, I provide reminders and occasionally send updated components as needed. For Safety Reserve owners, we provide courtesy notifications at defined intervals so they can review time-sensitive components and purchase optional refresh kits if they wish.
These building blocks are not a guarantee of outcomes or safety. They are designed to provide foundational resources that can support independent decision-making and adaptability when ordinary systems are strained.
The Founder's Promise: Vetted, Not Just Bought
I applied the same rigorous acquisition standards to this product that I used to protect critical infrastructure. We don't just 'source' components; we analyze expert data, research professional-grade specifications, and test them ourselves.
Every item in the Safety Reserve was selected based on durability considerations and published specifications. I didn't design this for a generic consumer; I designed it for my own three young adults. I chose each item the same way I evaluated risk in my career—carefully, deliberately, and with attention to how it would actually perform when needed.
Meet the Founder
Steve Birke spent over 35 years as a Senior Risk, Resiliency, and Operations leader for global financial institutions including JPMorgan and Citi. Throughout his career, he was responsible for identifying critical technical and operational vulnerabilities and syndicating recovery plans with the highest levels of leadership.
He founded J.P. Sutton to translate this institutional expertise into a structured personal preparedness framework. By applying the same methodologies used to vet vendors and safeguard billions in assets, he curated the Safety Reserve so that the next generation is never left without a recovery framework.
